tajikistan : recording & upgrade 1997

This was one of the very early projects undertaken that helped shape the ministry of HSI.

A mission leader had already set up a very small studio in Tajikistan and requested help in upgrading the studio to a higher level of quality and expertise. The musicians were already using a Roland E-460 Oriental keyboard. This keyboard has presets providing the ability to retune to various Eastern; scales including Persian and other scales that they use. These were some of the leading musicians in the nation who came to Christ through the witness of one musician and now form a congregation. This team was making good use of their studio using very old equipment and a four-track cassette recorder and were into their fourth recording upon our arrival. They were eager for and welcomed the upgraded digital equipment that was be supplied.

The studio was located on the top floor of Russian built apartment building, operating discreetly. Despite inferior equipment, the cassettes produced revealed excellent musicianship. Copies of the recordings were smuggled out of the country and were being used in Christian broadcasts coming into the nation and other Turkic-speaking nations. In so many cases musicians creatively and effectively use very old equipment, pushing it to the limits to extract everything possible.

Along with the studio, a songbook was produced of the first modern Tajik Christian songs. Computer-based notation software was employed to prepare this historic song resource. Three of these musicians were hired by a Christian-based relief agency which saw the wisdom of having them develop music and worship for their nation.

The original upgrade consisted of four-track minidisk machines along with keyboards and related equipment. Later upgrades included a Roland VS 880 and eventually a PC based system using Sonar.
